Mohamed Elewa BADAR

Prof Mohamed Elewa Badar holds the Chair in Comparative and
International Criminal Law & Islamic Law at Northumbria Law School at
Newcastle, UK.  He served as Senior Prosecutor and Judge in Egypt from
1997-2006. Prof Badar is the single author of The Concept of Mens Rea in
International Criminal Law [1] (Oxford: Hart, 2013/2015) and the
Islamist Militants and the Their Challenges to Sharia and International
Criminal Law (Hart, 2025). He is the Editor-in-Chief of the Arabic
version of the Commentary on the International Criminal Court [2] 2023.
He published 50 articles in refereed journals and chapters in prominent
books. His work was cited and quoted by the international criminal
tribunals and by distinguished scholars. In May 2021, he participated in
training the Iraqi judges and prosecutors on substantive international
criminal law as a part of UNITAD project for capacity building for the
Iraqi judiciary [3]. In December 2021 he was appointed to act as the
Legal Consultant of Mr Al Hassan Defence Team before the International
Criminal Court and in July 2023 he was appointed to act as ideology
expert for UNITAD.  He also worked as a legal consultant for Swedish
defence team on a high-profile case related to universal jurisdiction.
